The Nokia N96 is an evolution of the all-conquering Nokia N95, retaining its kitchen-sink approach to features while improving build quality and style. It's a tough act to follow however, and the N96 has got to be pretty special to lure dedicated N95'ers away from their beloved handset. So has Nokia succeeded? Of course they have! Luckily for us, the N96 is just as much a range-topping flagship as its predecessor. As the N96 is a slider phone, the 2.8" screen dominates the front panel. With a resolution of 240x320 and capable of displaying 16 million colors, it looks superb in the majority of situations. The N96 runs the Symbian S60 9.3 operating system with the excellent Feature Pack 2 installed, bringing with it very welcome upgrades to performance and stability, plus a wealth of visual tweaks and the very handy Active Standby screen.

Being a successor of the Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia N96 has some king-size spec sheet to top and it can't be accused of not trying. There's FP2, double the built-in storage and DVB-H. The bloodline is strong but the crown is heavy and ancestral sins will be held against the heir twofold. The modest battery capacity and the downgraded CPU do raise some questions that need their answers. Join us for an out-and-out review of Nokia's latest top-of-the-shelf offer. Let's see if it has got the performance to walk in them shoes size N95.

N96 is in fact the first Nokia handset that ships with a car charger and it's a neat accessory we appreciate. The pre bundled hands free is a two-piece combo, which means you can easily swap the provided headset without sacrificing the remote control. Transferring and accessing videos is even faster with the high-speed USB 2.0 connection and WLAN and HSDPA support. In select markets, the integrated DVB-H receiver offers live broadcast TV with an automatically updating program guide. The massive memory can store up to 40 hours of video content. The storage capacity of the Nokia N96 can even be further expanded with an optional microSD card, such as the new Nokia 8GB microSDHC Card MU-43 which increases the available memory of the Nokia N96 to a total of 24 GB. For added convenience, the Nokia N96 features a 'kickstand' on the back cover that allows for hands-free viewing.
