What modern medical experts speak of as surgery was practiced in India even before medicine came into existence in world. Sushruta, the father of Indian surgery is known to have performed surgery much before world conjured any remedy for wounds in wars, broken limbs, and surgeries of eye such as cataract operations.
Though the exact time of Sushruta is not known he seems to have existed much before Christ and popularly his living is dated to sixth century BC. In his treatise on surgery Sushruta described many different operations for surgery such as cutting, making an incision, scraping, piercing, inserting externally and finally stitching the opening back. His contribution as a surgeon as well as a teacher of the subject is indeed invaluable.
If we had such great masters in our country who knew the nuances of modern surgery even before things took shape in the west, why is it that they are not recognised?
We have a glorious past that needs to be celebrated instead of succumbing to other cultures. Our capabilities in every area be it science, maths or philosophy and any other area, are vast and well formed. There is urgency now more than ever to understand our culture and tradition instead of aping the west.
We salute and pay tribute to Sushruta who perhaps is the oldest surgeon we can remember.
