A man was sentenced to four months in jail and 100 hours of community service for hitting a dog in the head and burying it alive in October.
The judge ordered Hyrum Long, 75, not to possess or care for any animals and said Long must undergo psychiatric evaluation along with his sentence of 120 days in jail, with credit for time served. Long also received two years of formal probation.
Long and his adult daughter, Susan Johnson, were arrested late in October when neighbors saw the bloody dog partially buried in the yard.
The Forest Grove man told police that he hit the 13-year-old yellow Labrador in the head with a hammer to try to euthanize it and then buried it up to its neck.
Johnson pleaded guilty in December 2008 to a charge of first-degree animal neglect and was sentenced to 90 days in jail, two years of probation and 100 hours of community service.
The dog, Molly, was later put down by a veterinarian because of its injuries and long-term neglect.
