The scary truth about mesothelioma treatment options

Receiving a mesothelioma diagnosis can be both heartbreaking and scary for both the patient and their loved ones. It is true that there are not many options available to a mesothelioma patient, but you cannot lose heart.

As with all cancers, the key is to catch the disease as soon as possible, and that may open up more options for you. To do this, you should begin testing as soon as possible if you have ever been exposed to asbestos at any point in your life. This includes any secondhand exposure that you may have experienced.

The disease often takes up to forty years to develop, but that doesn’t mean you should wait. If you get tested on a regular basis, you will be much more likely to catch the disease as it first forms.

In stage one, the mesothelioma is a small tumor that has not spread to any other parts of the body. If you catch it at this stage, you can undergo surgery that could rid you of the cancer. Further testing is essential, because it is still possible for the tumors to form even after the first surgery. Many physicians give a stage one patient five years or more of life after a mesothelioma diagnosis is passed down. The “or more” is what you should focus on if you are a stage one mesothelioma patient.

Stage two patients are given two to four years of life expectancy, though this is only a generalization. It is not suggested to operate on the tumors at this point, because the cancer will have already begun to spread. Radiation and chemotherapy can shrink the tumors and stop the spread of the cancer, while also providing you with a more comfortable life. In some cases, life expectancy can increase.

At stage three, the life expectancy is quite a bit shorter, with most patients living six to eight months. There are some treatments that can increase comfort and decrease pain, and you may want to pursue these so that you can experience a better quality of life. Stages four and five are generally less than six months of life expectancy.

The harsh reality is that there is no known cure for this disease in its latter stages. It advances quickly, and despite all of today’s medical advances, there is little that can be done to sway the outcome. As such many patients choose palliative care. However others do continue to pursue experimental or aggressive techniques such as chemo washes, a pnemonectomy (removal of a lung) or radiation treatments.

About the Author:
Dealing with animals in a metro settings is now commonly known as nuisance wildlife control, and is becoming a popular topic the more we encroach on the natural habitat of animals. I suggest you don’t try to handle these animals on your own; instead contact a pest control professional in your local area just to be safe.
