The Broward Sheriff's Office is warning seniors about scam artists who are hunting for victims.

The most popular scam these days is called the "Lotto scam" or "pigeon drop." It involves a fake lottery ticket and the victim's entire bank account.

A 72-year-old woman from Pembroke Pines is one of the latest victims. Deputies said two con artists approached her at a grocery store. According to investigators, they showed her a "winning" lottery ticket, told her they were illegal immigrants and said they needed her help to cash it in.

The victim went to her bank and withdrew $40,000. She traded it for the ticket, which turned out to be fraudulent.

Dozens of seniors have fallen for similar scams across South Florida, so Crime Stoppers is putting resources into some of the senior centers in Broward County.

"We really need to get the word out. These are very difficult economic times, and people are doing desperate things," said Michael Calderine of BSO.

Deputies are hosting seminars to teach the elderly what to look out for.

Deputies said if a stranger approaches you in a public place, it is important not to befriend them. If they mention anything about the lottery, call for help immediately. Never get in a car with a stranger, and report suspicious activity right away.

Police hope if seniors are more cautious they won't end up with empty bank accounts.
