Port Angeles police and State Patrol crime lab workers plan to sift through 60 tons of trash, looking for the body of a baby they say was thrown away.
Police said a 16-year-old girl who was living in a Port Angeles house with her father and several other adults gave birth to the baby boy early Tuesday morning. Investigators said they believe the baby's body was put into a trash bin in the alley behind the house.
"Our belief was the baby was born alive, but died shortly after the birth," said Police Chief Terry Gallagher.
He said the trash was picked up Wednesday. The Port Angeles garbage was taken to a Waste Management facility in Tacoma. The company said it believes trash from the home is in one of two 30-ton bins, and those have been taken to another site in Graham, where investigators will search it for the baby's remains.
The girl was arrested Friday on suspicion of murder. The girl's 41-year-old father also was arrested and is accused of disposing of the body.
Police said they found a gun in the house, along with a metal pipe that was first thought to be a pipe bomb. Gallagher said it was actually a container to transport drugs.
The girl's father could face additional charges because of those items.
