Mediations in the Workplace

Every fight can get out of hand if there’s no one there to diffuse or referee it.

Often it is the case that disputes at work can explode into over- reactionary and unnecessary conflicts; tiring, draining and more importantly, overly expensive. Taking a discrepancy in the work place – between two employees, and even employee and employer – to tribunal is a highly heavy-handed approach and one that can cost both parties dearly, financially.

It is a frequent situation that such work discrepancies are over relatively minor issues that have become exacerbated through over sensitivity: a misconstrued email, an off-the-cuff remark; a love affair gone wrong or backfired.

Anything concerned with emotions of pride and hurt are potential hazards. There have been reports of work relationships collapsing on grounds that are as absurd as hair colour, choice of wine and of course, broken hearts. With situations buried in feelings it then seems almost ridiculous to take this as far as tribunal.

Thankfully, there are stages in between that can resolve and contain these arguments before they become so out of control, costly and irreparable. What these situations most commonly need is management and a solution by which the relationship can be saved. Mediations are a good idea and have a good success rate when it comes to resolutions. According to Thomas Mansfield, over 80% of mediations are successful.

Mediation is a formal practice though and requires expert help. Again, Thomas Mansfield is just one of the firms who are qualified to train managers, or assume the mediating role themselves. It is best to head to a specialist firm when addressing such issues. Thomas Mansfield, employment solicitors, London, is one of the city’s specialist employment solicitors, who are worth having a look at if a dispute at work seems to be spiralling out of control. They can bring it back into focus and work on solving the dispute before it goes too far.
