As the winter months approach and Christmas draws near, many Britons will have to spend a fair chunk of time travelling to whether their loved ones live. Some may drive, but for others, it's too far; instead forcing them to hop on a plane or take a long train ride.

These long days spent travelling don't have to be as dull as they sound though. There are plenty of activities you can do to keep you entertained, so why not look upon it as a good thing? You've got a good few hours to spend just relaxing; doing whatever you want. How you spend it is up to you, but here are some suggestions that could help you pass the time.

Books
Take some of your favourite books with you, or perhaps that mammoth novel you've been meaning to read for months, but never really had the time. Or, if you get sick when reading on trains or planes, why not take an audio books or two on your MP3 player? These are great for relaxing and can really help wile away the hours.

Films/Television shows
Many of us these days have a smartphone or tablet, meaning that wherever you go, your favourite movies or television shows can come with you. Charge up your device fully before you go to ensure that you've got the maximum media time possible and get going! It's a great way to help you unwind for a few hours before getting a bit of sleep, or - if you're not able to sleep whilst travelling - can keep you occupied without fail.

Travel games

You may laugh, but plenty of people like to play a game or two whilst on the road! Things like travel Scrabble, Monopoly or Guess Who can provide hours of laughs and entertainment. Even if you don't fancy shelling out a tenner for these, a simple deck of cards can give you access to hundreds of different games.
