A barrister is one of the two types of lawyers practicing law in British courts. The other type, solicitors are responsible for having exclusive access to a client. Barristers are able to maintain an audience in any court or plead cases in behalf of a client under the instruction of a solicitor. These legal professionals specialize in advocacy and are responsible for pleading a client's case and presenting evidence. Their services are also invaluable to the legal team in terms of providing expert knowledge in certain areas of the law. Additionally, there are two types of barrister. London is home to many self-employed barristers that often organize themselves into chambers. Employed barristers are those who are salaried, or those who work directly under private or public organizations. Solicitors who wish to employ their services turn to self-employed or independent barristers since they are able to work on any case without the danger of conflicting interests. Barristers are allowed to join several chambers in order to form better associations and support but are barred from holding positions as these might compromise their independence. Barristers are lawyers who have been given the authority to plead to the bar. They have the unique advantage of being able to find audience from any court, highest to lowest. Although solicitors are allowed to plead their client's case, this right is limited to the lower courts. Legal obstacles barring barristers from having direct access to clients have also been abolished. Some countries now allow barristers to speak and serve directly to a client but their limited knowledge compared to solicitors has been a limiting factor in this practice. Changes in some of the countries who also employ the profession of barristers and solicitors have led to the formation of a new class of lawyers called solicitor barristers. London has also seen some of these changes and solicitor advocates are now allowed to appear in higher courts, a right previously exclusive to barristers. Some solicitor barristers have even formed law firms enabling them to offer clients a wider range of legal services. This means that certain law firms can offer less expensive solicitor services for less severe charges, or where needed an expert London barrister for more serious criminal proceedings.
