Fresh on the heels of the millions of voluntary recalls from 2009 – 2010, Toyota will issue yet another recall early next week in regards to its unsafe wheels on all new Toyota and Lexus vehicles. The malfunction occurs only when driving at speeds above 60 miles per hour. The lug nuts loosen significantly, sometimes coming completely off, at these speeds and cause the wheels to wobble and come off.

The cause of this malfunction is not completely understood, but one technician who spoke only on the condition of anonymity attributes the malfunction to the shoddy design work. He is not upset about the recalls. According to him, the overtime he will receive from the influx of customers seeking to repair their cars will go toward his oldest daughter’s college fund, a mini-vacation for him and his mistress, and a new car, possibly the new Chevy Cruze. He only hopes that when Toyota does the recall after his wife goes on her road trip in her 2012 Camry. He is certain she will travel at speeds above 60 miles per hour. The last few accidents have left no survivors. He hopes his wife will be no exception.

Nearly all the members of the 135 person design team declined to comment. The two that did comment, again on the condition of anonymity, both agreed that the design was solid on the new Toyota wheels. The husband and husband pair mostly designed the undercarriage of the mid-sized Toyota and Lexus lines, but they got a glimpse of the wheels before they went to production. If anything is wrong with the wheels, they contend, it happened during production, which is manned by children under the age of five. The pair came to work for Toyota in 2008 when Ford went through a round of layoffs that left one of them jobless and the other with a much smaller paycheck. The production managers commented via a written statement on three lined paper penned in orange Crayola.

“The Toyota wheel issue was totally our fault. We can’t follow instructions unless there are less than three steps. And Toyota refuses to move nap time to a decent hour, so we have overtired workers down there using dangerous machinery, risking their lives to make a good quality car. We get it done, but sometimes we mess up. This was one of those times.”

When Toyota’s board was presented with this information, they vowed to negotiate with the workers so this will not happen again.

“We think if we can get them an hour nap in and some more juice boxes in the fridge, we can avoid this in the future.”
