When an individual has a desire to become a police officer there are many opportunities that become available to them. However event though the opportunities to become a police officer may be plentiful, there will be many obstacles that a person must face and overcome during the process. The police recruitment demands of any police department are strong when a person looks to become a police officer. Understanding what these demands are can help an individual in improving their chances to become a police officer.

The phase of application is the first representation of an obstacle a person must face in order to become a police officer. This phase has no personal introduction or opportunity for a person to sell themselves personally. It is a written document where an individual has to express both their desire to become a police officer along with what they offer a police department. For the individual who is unable to impress police recruiters at this phase they will never make it into the next phases. The best way to impress recruiters with your application is to make sure you convey your passion for the position. Also it is important to make sure that your personal accomplishments are relevant to the position that you are applying to. Identifying accomplishments that have no relevance to your future in this career only leads to wasted space and distracts the application reviewer from important points in your application.

If you are successful in moving past the application phase there are still many more challenges ahead that you will face in your pursuit to become a police officer. Individuals will soon face a series of tests that are designed to test your specific educational knowledge along with the basic aspects of common knowledge. As a weapon in the fight against crime knowledge is test to make sure the most knowledgable and street smart candidates move onto the further phases. Since every law enforcement agency is required to issue the same standardized testing there is often materials available to help individuals in studying and training in the related subjects, providing you with a step above the competition. This means that regardless of the agency you are applying to there is information available to help you prepare for the exams along with police courses that are available. Performing well on these exams will prove to your recruiters that you have the intelligence to maximize your potential in trying to become a police officer.

Being accepted past the application phase and performing well on your standardized testing gets you on the right road to become a police officer. Interviews with recruiters and test regarding your physical abilities represent the next two phases of the recruiting process. The interview phase to become a police officer involves both role playing situations along with one on one and group interviewers. Departments use this tool to assess how you will react to different situations along with assessing the type of person you are. The physical testing to become a police officer places an individual in a series of obstacle courses that test strength and endurance.
