The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection is issuing a warning about a scam where people are asked for account information via a text message that appears to be from a bank.

Local Associated Banks said they have been receiving dozens of calls after people got text messages that read "Please verify your Associated Bank account due to unusual activity" and prompted people to call a number to give their bank routing numbers.

Associated Bank said that scammers have been sending the text messages or a phishing e-mail with similar wording to customers, as well as non-customers, in Wisconsin and Illinois.

Consumer protection officials said they've had more than 20 complaints about the scam.

Madison police and the Wisconsin Bankers Association are investigating.

Associated Bank said that if customers have released information as a result of this scam, or if they have questions, they may contact the Associated Bank Customer Care Center at 800-236-8866 or the nearest Associated Bank office.
