Animals hold a significant place in the family and having the proper care for them is a priority. Pet check-ups and emergency room visits and vaccinations are all expenses that quickly add up. Without the proper finances, the pet's life could be at risk. One simple illness could result in thousands of dollars in out of pocket expense.

Many pet owners today are choosing Pet insurance, which is giving them the security that they need for the pet's health. Some insurance policies cover 50% reimbursement on prescription diet foods if the pet is overweight. This is one way to help to prevent a heart problem in the pet and show's commitment of the pet insurance companies when it comes to the care of the pet.

A good pet insurance policy will cover cancers, surgeries, illnesses, accidents, prescriptions and other medical procedures that the pet may need to undergo such as X-rays. Pet insurance is not as costly as one may think.

Pet Insurance Buyer's Guide

There are questions that you should ask a pet insurance provider prior to purchasing the policy which include:

1. How do I know that you are the company that will be there for me and my pet when I need it?

A pet insurance company must be trusted and reputable. They should be recognized in the industry. It is a good idea to read reviews, get testimonials and check with the Better Business Bureau.

2. Am I free to choose my own veterinarian?

Pet owners often form a relation with their veterinarian. It is important that you are able to keep your existing veterinarian or visit one of your choice. It is also important that you are free to visit any emergency room providers or veterinary specialists. You should choose a policy that does not have restrictions when it comes to health care providers for your pet.

3. Does you company offer insurance policies that are not only affordable but understandable?

It is important to know what is covered and how much you will be reimbursed for each claim. You also want to make sure the company does not have lifetime limits on coverage for your pet, that the benefits renew each year, and that the development of chronic or recurring conditions will be covered.

4. How are claims handled?

The insurance provider should include a detailed description of the veterinary expenses based on a published benefit schedule. They should not be based on a percentage of the vet bill. This schedule will mean that there will be no surprises to you and that what is shown is what will be reimbursed.

5. How are insurance premiums set?

This is an important question. Some insurance providers may charge higher premiums or certain pet breeds. Some may base the premiums on the age of your pet. Some may increase your premium after your policy has started and you have filed claims. It is important to select a company that your rates and coverage are not affected by the number of claims you may submit.
