Leave it to the tabloids to plant the seeds for the next round of celebrity offspring. First up on the womb watch is Mariah Carey, who two weeks ago told Ellen DeGeneres that she wasn't baking a Nick Cannon-beget bun in her oven even as she turned down a proffered glass of champagne.
The New York Post says spies supposedly spotted the high-maintenance chanteuse exiting the Los Angeles office of a "well-known" OB-GYN. What's more, say the moles, Mariah was "clutching what looked like a sonogram and being greeted by her entourage with cheers. She was ebullient."
Sure, her minions could have been in a sycophantic frenzy simply because she aced her pap test, but the paper reminds us that Minnie Driver was seen leaving the same office holding the same type of paper before her pregnancy was announced.
Mrs. Cannon's rep does some bet-hedging by informing the Post, "As far as I'm told, it's not true."
Meanwhile, the New York Daily News further stokes the stork burblings by speculating that Mariah called off her planned tour because of her purportedly delicate condition.
Says her mouthpiece, "A tour was discussed, but nothing was confirmed. I have not been told she's pregnant."
Still, it may be premature start knitting butterfly- and rainbow-covered high-heeled booties: Nick tells Ryan Seacrest the rumors are false, adding that they weren't even in L.A. at the time of the ostensible OB-GYN sighting.
But Carey, who wedged herself into a dress that showed off her flat stomach at the American Music Awards on Nov. 23, hasn't exactly tried to silence the belly rumblings.
"People are constantly asking me if I'm pregnant, but I don't like to talk about it too much," she coyly told the London Daily Mirror last month. "I just think about it as the next phase. We'll see."
Meanwhile, on the heels of rumors that Kate Moss physically tussled with rocker beau Jamie Hince over where to spend the holidays, there's speculation that her recent fashion choices may be more about camouflage than couture.
The London Sun's stork suspicions were raised when the veteran supermodel, who has been dogged by baby chatter for weeks, chose a midsection-disguising drop-waist gown for a fashion fete she attended in China with Hince a few days back.
And even though Moss, who is already mom to 5-year-old Lila, was recently snapped looking bleary-eyed as she exited a London club, the tab says she's planning to make a "big announcement" at an upcoming gathering of her nearest and dearest at her country home.
And finally, Jermaine Dupri's denial earlier this week that he and longtime love Janet Jackson are awaiting a stork delivery hasn't stopped Life & Style from featuring the singer on its latest cover under the headline, "Yes, I'm Pregnant: Her dream's finally coming true, but Janet's scared about becoming a mom at 42."
While the tab says the alleged bundle of joy is the reason why Jackson canceled her tour, it also quotes Jermaine's aunt as saying she texted him about whether they were expecting and he replied, "Not yet." In other words, stay tuned.
