Depending on where you are, the winter months can be quite cold. Taking the time to do some work around the home ahead of time or before it gets too cold can make all the difference in the world, especially when it can help prevent water damage. What’s great is that the majority of these maintenance jobs can be performed by the homeowner. Unfortunately, many homeowners may not know where to begin; hopefully these tips will help.

Winter Home Maintenance Tips

1. For outdoor furniture, it’s important to clean any and all parts, including the cushions. If there is rust damage, it should be repaired. It is highly recommended that outdoor furniture be stored indoors for the winter. However, if furniture can’t be stored, cover furniture and allow for airflow so now mold/mildew can form.

2. Fireplaces should be professionally inspected and cleaned. This should be done at least once a year as it helps to prevent chimney fires.

3. Check for air leaks around windows and doors. One of the easiest ways to check, is by moving a lighter around the window or door frame to see if the flame begins to move or flicker from a breeze. It can be repaired with caulking or by replacing the wood frame. A plastic sealing kit can also be purchased at home improvement store. Doors can usually be easily fixed with a simple door sweep.

4. Proper insulation is a must in both your attic and basement. When inspecting your insulation, keep an eye out for any dark, dirty spots as they may indicate possible air leaks.

5. Drain gas from your gasoline powered equipment for the winter so that it can be stored away.

6. Start early and keep plenty of wood cut and stacked for burning during the winter months. Keep a smaller stack closer to your home for quick access.

7. If you store a gas powered generator for emergencies, be sure to have containers of gas stored away for the generator. Gasoline should be stored in either a garage or in an outside storage unit. Make sure your generator is in working order.

8. Double check snow shovels and snow blower are in good shape. Waiting until a snow storm to buy one, it’s likely store will be sold out.

9. Regardless of how you heat your home, it’s important to have your heating unit inspected to ensure that it is working properly.

By taking the time to perform these routine home maintenance steps, you can prevent problems not only during these cold months but can also prevent water damage in the future. For more information on ways to prevent water damage, visit the mold remediation experts at Able Restoration.
