A coalition of pro-family groups and media watchdog organizations says one of the most vile music video programs has been pulled from BET.
For years, the music video show Rap City was aired on the Black Entertainment Television network. Earlier this year, the Parents Television Council (PTC) and the Enough is Enough Campaign for Corporate Responsibility conducted a research study regarding BET's and MTV's daytime music video programming. The study found that children who watched BET's Rap City were bombarded with adult content once every 38 seconds.
PTC and other pro-family groups pressured sponsors of Rap City to pull their ads. Pastor Delman Coates, founder of the Enough is Enough Campaign, says an advertiser accountability campaign saw swift results.
"We asked them to, first of all, educate themselves of the kind of messages that corporate ad dollars are sponsoring, and we asked them to remove their commercials from these specific music video programs," he explains. "Several of them did that."
Pastor Coates says it is time for networks to take responsibility for their products.
Joining PTC and Enough is Enough in applauding the announcement that BET has cancelled Rap City were the groups Industry Ears and the National Congress of Black Women.
