Key Highlights
The South African construction industry registered a significant decline during 2009–2010 as a result of the slowdown in construction activity in the country. The primary reason behind this decline in construction activity was the completion of various infrastructure and other development-related projects associated with the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament. The overall construction industry recorded a CAGR of 5.91% in US$ terms (8.17% in ZAR terms) during the review period, helped by a 23.0% growth in 2007 in US$ terms (28.9% in ZAR terms). With the government aiming to increase investment in infrastructure projects, the market is expected to grow steadily from 2011. WMI expects the country’s construction industry to grow at a CAGR of 4.22% during the forecast period to reach US$15.5 billion in 2015.
