It is done to check the mental status, function of cranial nerves, reflex, strength, coordination and sensation of the affected person.
• Our nervous system consists of brain and the spinal cord. The nerves proceeding from this are known as peripheral or cerebrospinal nerves.
• Our nervous system is very complicated set of nerves. Our nervous system controls all mental and bodily functions.
• Any imbalance or disturbance in this can cost a person and can cause serious type of problems like any serious injury on this crucial organ can make a person paralyzed for the rest of his life. Besides this, memory loss can also happen. Other problems like pain and short term memory loss can also occur.
Psychiatry is a specialty that deals with the study and treatment of the mental disorders. These disorders include behavioral, cognitive, affective and perceptual abnormalities.
• The assessment starts with mental status examination and the case history is diagnosed. Some psychological tests and physical examinations are conducted.
• Psychiatric treatment includes psychoactive medication, psychotherapy and other techniques like Trans cranial magnetic stimulation.
• The treatment is delivered on an inpatient or outpatient basis. It depends on the severity of the disorder.
• Although, some neurologist believed that mental illness problems are somehow neurological disorders and affects central nervous system.
• Neurological diseases often have psychiatric manifestations such as post stroke manifestations, and dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease.
However, no sharp distinction is available between neurology and psychiatry. But both are important and required from their respected prospective.
