Racine Mayor Gary Becker is under arrest on possible charges of child pornography and solicitation of a minor, according to city officials.
The 51-year-old mayor is being held in the Kenosha County Jail on $165,000 bond.
In a state Department of Justice news release, agents arrested Becker at a Brookfield mall on Tuesday night on tentative charges of attempted second-degree sexual assault of a child, child enticement and possession of child pornography. Other allegations include exposing a child to harmful materials, using of a computer to facilitate a child sex crime and misconduct in public office.
City administrator Ben Hughes said that Becker was arrested by agents from the state Division of Criminal Investigation.
Racine County District Attorney Michael Nieskes said he expected to file formal charges late Wednesday or, more likely, Thursday.
Becker was held Wednesday in the Kenosha County Jail on a $165,000 cash bond.
The case is under review by the Racine County District Attorney's office.
City Council President David Maack said he got a call from the police chief shortly after midnight telling him about the arrest involving child pornography.
Maack said he was "shocked and disappointed" by the news and alerted the city's other aldermen. Maack said he'll serve as acting mayor for the time being. He was not sure what would happen if Becker couldn't finish his term.
Becker was elected mayor in 2003 and ran unopposed in 2007, WISC-TV reported.
