The different manners of dealing with a rodent infestation are outlined below. We have already addressed a couple of them in our previous articles, namely Sanitation and Exclusion. Sanitation Exclusion Predators: The rodents’ natural predators can be a great help to the common homeowner. Our first instinct is to think of the family dog or cat as a predator, but often times our pets have become as comfortable on the couch as we have, and are too well fed to worry about hunting. Other predators that can be beneficial to reducing your rodent infestation are birds of prey, such as hawks and owls and non poison snakes. Trapping: Trapping can be an effective way to reduce your rodent population. For those with a squeamish stomach, there are also traps that are completely enclosed now, so that the massacre does not have to be fully witnessed after it has taken place. There will be different sized trapping devices depending on your specific rodent pest. Don’t feel intimidated by not having experience setting traps. There are numerous step by step videos showing you exactly how to set the trap without losing a finger in the process. It is much easier than you can imagine. Runway Traps: As we’ve discussed in our previous articles, rodents like to travel the same path again and again to get where they are going. You are then able to use this genetic rodent programming to assist with his ultimate demise. Place traps along the path that your rodent pest seems to follow. Remember to look for clues such as grease spots along walls where the rodent has traveled. There are precautions that must be taken if you are using open traps. The obvious being pets and children, because with Murphy’s Law remaining in full effect, if it can happen, it WILL happen. So use rodent traps only in areas that cannot be accessed by either. Glue Boards: Glue traps is easy to set out and do not require much technical prowess. Some glue boards are even enclosed, again, to protect our delicate psyches from T.M.D.R.I, (too much dead rat information). Again, review the specific type of rodent targeted by your glue board and make sure it is appropriate to your specific size of rodent. Poison Baits: Poisoning baits may be necessary in areas that have a large population of rodent pests. At some point, there are just too many to trap and the breeding cycles can continue, leaving you with a never ending supply of new rodent pests. It’s like the rodent world version of Willy Wonka’s Everlasting Gobstopper, only without any sugary goodness. So in these cases you will need to utilize poison baits in order to reach the whole population and reclaim your home. Extreme caution will need to be exercised when placing poison bait because you do not want anyone or anything having access to the baits except your unwanted rodents.
