Kendall Coffey, author of "Spinning the Law": Trying Cases in the Court of Public Opinion”, is a renowned national figure in the legal community. As a former U.S. attorney for South Florida, Kendall Coffey has used his experiences in notorious trials of the recent past to create an analysis of the effect of the public perception on the outcome of the judge and jury ruling. His book explains the history, effects, and methods to adapt this unique perspective to ones own practice.

Kendall Coffey attended the University of Florida Fredric G. Levin College of Law after completing an undergraduate degree in Broadcast Journalism. He then went on to serve as the U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Florida for three years. Coffey spent a year as the Director of the Florida Bar Foundation and went on to serve on the Immigration Coordinating Committee for the American Bar Association. Coffey opened his own firm, Coffey & Wright, in 2002. Coffey is currently a partner in Coffey Burlington. Kendall Coffey has represented such high profile clients such as Elian Gonzalez and has been involved in cases with historic importance such as the 2000 Presidential recount litigation in Bush v. Gore.

Coffey specializes as a legal analyst and is a high-profile guest analyst for many major news sources, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Fox News and Telemundo to name a few. His analyses of trials that have high public interest are more vivid because of his depth of knowledge of the media and the unique point that the spin dramatically affects the outcome of trials.

Kendall Coffey is regularly recognized as one of Florida Trend's Florida Legal Elite, a Super Lawyer by Florida's Super Lawyer magazine, and was recognized by the National Law Journal as one of its Lawyers of the Year in 2000 as a member of Gore Legal Team.

Coffey is also an adjunct faculty member for the University of Miami School of Law and teaches Florida constitutional Law. Most recently he has served as chair for the Southern District Conference, Florida Federal Judicial Nominating Commission.

“Spinning the Law” was published in 2010 and addresses an issue the public does not consider when following intriguing cases that are highly publicized: the effect of public opinion on the outcome of the verdict. Kendall Coffey addresses this issue in his book and offers ways that law professionals can use this perspective to control which truths the public sees in these cases.
The full extent to which a public view of a case or client can influence the ruling within the court is unknown. Kendall Coffey makes an impressive argument for the presentation of the human moment in legal proceedings. Not many will connect to the legal complexities of a case, but anyone will understand the emotional issue of the reuniting of a father to a son, as in the case of Elian Gonzalez.

Kendall Coffey is currently touring to promote “Spinning the Law” and will undoubtedly continue to offer significant contributions to the field of law in Florida and across the county.
