The basil plant is often used by culinary artists and chefs as a seasoning, especially in most of Italian cuisine. With basil, your culinary is sure to be rich in flavors. Today, however, the benefits of basils are not contained in cookery alone.

Basil is among the herbal plants known for their medicinal purposes. Basil herbal plant is used in curing indigestion. The herbalists studied the properties of herbal plants and found out that most of them are naturally effective as treatment.

Bearing the scientific name Ocimum Basilicum, basil belongs to the mint family of plant. It is recommended for nausea and motion sickness because of its antispasmodic properties.

The taste of this herbal plant is strong, which promotes saliva production for proper food digestion. Basil plant is also aromatic. When extracted, its oil is among the many essentials, containing methyl chavicol.

When you use fresh, you may benefit well from its folic acid. Dried basil makes a good source of potassium, calcium and iron. If you have nose and throat infections, you can use dried basil because it is also good for the respiratory system.

The phytochemicals and many antiviral substances make basil herb good for acne, wounds, parasitic infections, insect bites, and dental problems. Herbal remedies are not new. They are as old as time.

In the past, basil leaves were boiled and taken as tea for relief of cramps, indigestion, constipation, itching, heart problems, nausea, and ringworm. The leaves of the basil plant are also excellent for alcoholism, fever, and colds.

Bruised leaves, or pounded leaves, were known to cover and disinfect wounds, snake bites, cure warts, and arthritic pain. If you are in a place where there are mosquitoes around, you can get natural insect repellant from basil by rubbing some of its leaves on your skin.

According to the scientists who conducted studies on basil, the herbal plant is abundant in many nutrients. Among these are vitamin C, calcium, vitamin A and phosphorus. It also contains minerals, such as magnesium, potassium and iron.

Because of the content of vitamin A, the plant is good for eyesight, skin and hair. Among the carotenoids, a type of phytochemicals, beta carotene is one that can be found in the basil plant, and which is converted to vitamin A in the body. Beta carotene is a powerful antioxidant.

Antioxidants are helpful in fighting cell damage caused by free radicals in the body. The free radicals occur naturally in the body, however, if their number becomes uncontrollable, serious illness such as cancer may surge.

Scientists claimed that to counter the ill effects of free radicals, it is best to eat foods that are abundant in antioxidant like beta carotene. Growing basil plants has become a hobby of most people.

It does not require skills in order to grow the basil plant. All you need to know is the basic information such as the type of soil used, and other elements of life like sunlight and water.

You can even cultivate a basil plant in your yard. Even if you do not have a yard, you can put them pots. Not only does it make your residence insect-free. It can also make your health whole, and appetite full.
