First things first! What is automation?  Author:Logi Suite Website:http://www.logisuite.com/ Added: Wed, 17 Aug 2011 23:56:04 -0500

It’s a series of recurring tasks used for the assembly of goods. But, some companies are pretty slow when thinking of new improvements to their operation, like automating. They feel that if it isn’t broke, why fix it? Then again, why is Japan building cars so quickly? They keep fixing what isn’t broken over and over again. Same with General Motors, etc. And they are doing nothing but progressing.
Improving what isn’t broken is the thinking when it comes to automation. The willingness to adapt change can broaden the possibilities of the future. The most critical element required to support an automation project is a company’s capability to recognize process skills. Such process skills have been implemented by only a few companies.
Any automation operation should have an IT department. This is absolutely essential. You might want to ask yourself this: What projects (automation) have been approved and put to use in your company in the last year? If your answer is none, you may want to review your infrastructure and decision making in order to see if they are on life support or alive and well.
Another important infrastructure element is in industrial engineering. Their goal is to solve customer’s problems by:
Having close communication with maintenance techs, operators, management and other engineers as well as all parties involved.
Whatever your customer’s needs are, focus on them. In this way you will meet deadlines, and complete work on small and large projects just by paying close attention to detail.
Try to fully understand the issues involved so that there are no surprises in the project.
Make sure all your documents are completed.
What about decision making in your company?
Well….there are only two decisions to make, and that is whether you are going to make a decision or not. How important is sticking to a decision? It’s a must! If progress is to be made, someone has to write down the path to take. You will face some issues that can be divided into performance and cost related targets, and when a decision has to be made, there is always a trade-off involving these two targets.
An automated logistics operation is the process of controlling the effective flow of goods and services. This, of course, includes inbound, outbound, internal and external activities. It also includes return of equipment for ecological purposes.
Logistics means that time is saved by all concerned is extremely valuable. Still, involved in this time saving feat and to a varying degree, are some common everyday functions that most companies are presented with. This includes customer service, sourcing, scheduling, packaging and even assembly. Automating your logistics operations will be one of the main functions within your company.
The Webster definition of logistics is the following: “Logistics means having the right thing, at the right place at the right time”. Putting this meaning in one package in order to run your automated logistics operation may prove to be the start you need to succeed.
