Black pearls are unbelievably gorgeous ranging from dark gray to blue and peacock green. They are called black pearls because of the dark hues but in true sense they are shades of grey with several overtones.

Black Akoya pearls and black Tahitian pearls are two of the most popular pearls available. Black Akoya pearls, with their dissimilar shapes and hues, offer adornments which are unique and distinct. Tahitian black pearls are classic symbols of rarity, beauty and solidity.

Tahitian black pearls are found in French Polynesia in the south pacific. They are formed in three shapes: round, baroque and circled. Akoya pearls are found off the coasts of Japan and China.

The Tahitian black pearl is born out of Pinctada Margaritifera, commonly known as the black lipped oyster.

The black pearl is rare, exotic and breathtakingly beautiful. These pearls range from 8 to 18 mm in size and when strung into a necklace, can cost anywhere between $100 for a small to $10,000 for larger designs. The latter can be crafted from large pearls in excess of 15mm. Black pearls are extremely rare compared to ordinary white pearls. So be ready to shell out big money to own one of these black pearl necklaces. On the other hand white pearls are comparatively less expensive due to their easy cultivation and availability.

Black sea gems are considered luxurious a can cost a fortune, while white pearls are a great choice for those on a budget.

A perfectly spherical black pearl is more expensive then the one which is semi-round.

Black pearl necklace is generally worn on special occasions like a cocktail party.

Black pearls earrings are generally made from Tahitian or Akoya pearls, but there are several other freshwater and saltwater pearls such as Mikimoto or Honora.

These earrings are sometimes mixed with other gemstones to create an array of stunning designs, giving the wearer that distinctive look. These designs make a big style statement. Stud and dangle are the two most popular designs that are available with black pearls. The cluster type earring is generally made with black sea gems along with other semi-precious stones such as emerald and jade. Silver and gold are some of the base metals used to set these black beauties.

One of the most cherished and sought after rings in this category is the single large black pearl set in white gold. Black pearl rings are sensuous and beautiful. Another interesting design which every woman will love is pearls that are set to resemble a bunch of grapes, interspersed with diamonds.
