William Shakespeare used the word 'fate' prolifically in his plays and this illustrates the importance of the world in which some babies are born in palaces and others in gutters. Brave people have tried to alter their fate since the earliest times. Since the eighteenth century poor people chose two ways. Some explored new parts of the world and others attempted to alter the political and social systems that determined their fate. Many Russian women seek now to challenge their fate. In the eighteenth century Imperial Russia did not begin the process of exploration that the west European countries did. Russia expanded eastwards and soon hit China, already very civilized. Western countries discovered the Americas, Australia and and Africa where there was room for expansion and growth. The communism that crept around the globe during the twentieth century did not get a hold in those countries because people were too busy accumulating wealth. It is now apparent that communism proved unworkable and was hi-jacked by dictators in both Russia and China, leaving most people poor. Many were reduced to even worse situations than had pertained under imperialist systems. The individual was powerless to alter the fate that befell him or her. When the iron grip of dictators was loosened they sought many ways out. For many Russian women that meant trying to move westwards. People of European extraction who sought their fortunes in the colonies often found wealth and adventure. In many cases they gained undeserved wealth but some downsides balanced the good fortune. Many of the cultural refinements of their home continents were lost as they struggled to overcome the wild frontiers that they encountered. Though many still spoke of Europe as 'home', they lost many of the cultural refinements of civilization. Russian women were well educated during the Communist era and many retain the cultural niceties that have been passed down to them. They tend to be intelligent, well educated and culturally sophisticated. This makes them ideal partners for colonial men who have assets but are rather thin on manners and cultural values. Many westerners still regard online dating sites with a sense of slight shame or embarrassment. Although arranged marriages were common in the higher echelons of society Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' instilled in English culture a strong sense that romantic love should be the way in which couples unite. People who access online dating sites often have to put aside the innate feelings of shame and admit to their real need to find a partner and escape loneliness. In the case of females they have to have confidence in their attractiveness and for males it is a matter of considering eligibility on the basis of financial status first, and character second.
