A 2-year-old girl is in the fight for her life as her family tries to get her well before their insurance coverage runs out. Emerson White needs an expensive transplant surgery and is waiting to undergo an operation at the intensive care unit at the Nebraska Medical Center. Her family is fighting to keep their insurance and get her the life-saving transplant she needs. Her problems started early-on in life. At age one, she received an intestine transplant after suffering intestinal problems. “It's really hard, it's hard to watch your baby fight. It’s hard to watch them fight and know you can't do anything," her mother Erika White said. Besides the transplant, the family is facing another battle as their insurance is about to run out. "I watch her fight so hard everyday for her life and for somebody else to decide whether or nor they want to pay after she fought so hard it isn't right," White said. The White family is from Colorado but Emerson’s unique condition and surgery is only available at a few hospitals across the country. The nearest was at the Nebraska Medical Center. While Emerson and her mother were in Omaha they received a phone call from the Colorado Department of Healthcare saying Emerson’s insurance will run out by the end of the month. They said she wasn't eligible because the plan she's under doesn't cover medical care out of state. Emerson’s surgery costs nearly $1 million. The deputy director of the department said Emerson’s case will be reviewed. The director said, "We're looking at a variety of options and then communicating those options to the family to see what to do to the medical eligibility.” Erika White said the different options that could be offered weren't conveyed in the first conversation. However, she said she is hopeful a solution is reached and that her daughter can get the care she so desperately needs.. "The fact my daughter has the will to live and the surgeons can save her life should be enough to give her a chance to live," White said. The department said they will review the case and find the appropriate medical plan to put Emerson on. They hope to have a decision in the next couple of days.
