A 21-year-old mother has been arrested on charges of cruelty to a juvenile after deputies said she admitted to throwing her infant son across the room, causing severe injuries.
Sheriff Newell Normand announced the arrest of Shannon N. Cooper of Edenborn Avenue in Metairie.
According to Normand, detective Solomon Burke was following up on a child abuse case when he learned that a three-week-old child had been brought into an emergency room on January 12 and that Cooper had said the child had fallen off the couch.
Normand said that during a second interview by Burke, Cooper admitted that on two occasions she had gotten frustrated with her child crying and threw him across the room. On both occasions, Cooper said the injuries required immediate medical attention and she took him to the hospital.
She was arrested on two counts of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.
The baby, along with a 13-month-old sister, have been placed in protective custody.
