1. Locate the water pipe which supplies the WC cistern and completely shut off the stop valve which controls it. If no valve exists, block the cistern outlet.

2. Lift the top off the cistern and then press the flush handle to empty it. No more fresh water should flow in as the ball float falls.

3. Disconnect the overflow pipe. If it is made of lead you should replace it with a PVC pipe run. Saw it off if you are repositioning the WC elsewhere.

4. Disconnect the supply pipe in the same way as the overflow. If you are replacing the piping altogether, you can cut through it with a hacksaw.

5. Disconnect the cistern from the pan. A close-coupled one is lifted off; with other suites you may have to disconnect the flush pipe between cistern and pan.

6. Unscrew the pan from the floor, and then use a hammer and cold chisel to break the joint between the pan arid the outlet, tapping gently but firmly.

7. When you have fractured the joint, ease the pan away from the pipe. Even if it is bedded on mortar it should come away easily. Chip away the old mortar.

8. Dispose of the pan and extract any loose bits of debris from the socket. Stuff news pa per into the opening to stop bits falling into the soil pipe.

9. If you are going to use the pipe again clean it out carefully, ready to be connected up to the new WC pan with a proprietary connector.
