So, you know you need to get a web host to help assist you in getting your website on the Internet. You may need space on a server in a data center or you may need to rent your own server from a dedicated host. You ask yourself, ‘What type of hosting do I need?’ and ‘Will they help me determine my hosting needs?’

You might first consider a shared or virtual host if you are looking for an inexpensive selection. With this hosting option, you share a server with a company’s other clients. You maintain your own site and account while the host manages everything else. Some facts about shared hosting include:

• Multiple websites on a server
• Same network connection
• Same hardware resources
• Same software
• You are only responsible for managing the design and content of your website
• Good for companies with basic e-commerce, bulletin board or small chat rooms
• Best for small to medium-sized businesses

The shared hosting method has a few risks you might consider. By having multiple large websites on one server, you run the risk of that server being compromised. Also, performance might be a setback. For example, if one of the websites on the server is running a feature or promotion, it can take up a lot of bandwidth and the others sharing the server tend to suffer.

A different route to consider is a dedicated server. As you determine your hosting needs, consider renting your own server from a hosting provider. With a dedicated server, the host is responsible for the hardware, software and maintenance of the server. You can actually customize the server with remote server access and no other company shares this server with you. It is yours alone. Dedicated hosting is good for companies with:

• Mission critical e-commerce
• Interactive sites
• Multiple websites
• High-speed and significant data transfer requirements
• Unique software needs
• Limited technology staff

When asking, “What type of hosting do I need?” consider all types of web hosting first. Then, narrow down the ones that answer to YOUR needs. You will be able to make a simple decision as the web hosts have specific functions and cater to a specific need. As long as you take the time to research, you will determine your hosting needs all on your own.
