He is described as a popular and well-liked teacher at Graham Kapowsin High School, but 27-year-old Scott Milliman now faces charges he had a sexual relationship with one of his students.
Investigators said that the student, a 16-year-old girl he met while teaching an English class, told them detailed information about the affair, including a stay at a Puyallup Motel where the two were allegedly seen checking in after midnight on Jan. 15 and leaving a little more than two hours later.
“We do have video we got from the hotel that shows him coming in and out of the room with the girl at the hotel. The video speaks for itself,” said Detective Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
According to probable cause documents, the two e-mailed each other and kissed in class.
Investigators said Milliman "talked about the fact that their relationship was illegal" and told the girl "if anyone found out, he could lose his teaching license or go to jail.”
Parents and students at Graham Kapowsin High School told KIRO 7 they were surprised at the allegations, saying Milliman was well liked at the school.
Because of the girl's age, Milliman could have been charged with child rape, but since the victim claims the relationship was consensual, prosecutors are charging him with three counts of sexual misconduct with a minor.
Milliman pleaded not guilty to those charges.
“We've just received the police report, it contains all the alleged evidence they plan to use and we haven't had a chance to review it. She was a student and there was never any improper relationship,” said Milliman’s attorney, Michael Kelly.
