If you own a Sony PlayStation 3, you will probably have some technical problems with it at some point. The result will be a period where you will not be able to play any games. Understanding how troubleshooting should be done will allow you to attempt a repair on your own, saving a lot of time and quite a bit of money in the process.

Below are a few troubleshooting tips for your PlayStation 3 console, which will allow you to get rid of problems that might otherwise make you send the PS3 to repairs.

Restarting the console

If you see that the console is frozen, press the power button and keep it in that position for around ten seconds. Doing that will close the console, so a simple restart should make the console work again.

Cooling down the PS3

If you notice red lights flashing on your PS3, or alternating green and red lights, your PS3 is probably overheated. The console should be turned off and allowed to cool for around half an hour. Touching it should feel like it’s cool. When you start playing on it again, you should insure that there is good ventilation for the console, so these kind of problems don’t appear again.

Clean the game discs

When the console has issues reading discs, you might want to try to clean them, after which you should attempt using them again. Your PS3 game discs should be treated with care, you should avoid leaving them in sunlight and you shouldn’t keep them at high temperatures. You also should make sure they don’t become scratched, so keep them in a case.

Check the cables

This is one of the most basic troubleshooting steps, but there are many errors that are caused by cables that are lose or plugged where they shouldn’t be. The errors of no display are usually caused by this type of problem.

Checking the system settings

The PS3 consoles can have settings that are improperly used, so it might end up not working. One example would be playing with the PS3 on a HDTV, while the settings are made for a standard TV. In this case, the display will not work as it should. You should insure that all the video, audio and game settings are set as they should be.

If you can’t fix the console by using your regular troubleshooting methods, you shouldn’t despair, as there are plenty other things you can do.
