Traditional radiators are a great choice for both period and modern homes. Traditional cast iron radiators offer a classic design feature which is also highly effective at heating rooms.

Asking the Right Questions

When you are buying traditional radiators you do need to make sure you are using a reputable supplier. This type of radiator is not easy to make and requires special skills and equipment. If traditional radiators are made poorly they will not work properly and will leak. Here are some important questions to ask when you are buying traditional radiators:

1. Have the radiators been pressure tested?

Many companies will evaluate each cast iron radiator before sale with a standard mains water pressure test (4 to 5 Bar). This will help to make sure there are no leaks and that the overall integrity of the radiator is sound. Some of the top companies will also use a more extensive hydraulic pressure test. This will identify even the smallest cracks that could lead to leaks in the future. Make sure you double check with the supplier that the traditional radiators you are buying with have been fully tested.

2. Do you offer a guarantee with your radiators?

A guarantee is important as even if the radiators have been tested they could only reveal internal damage once fully installed. If you have a good guarantee from the manufacturer/supplier then you should be able to get a replacement if any of your new traditional radiators leak once they have been plumbed into your system. It could be very expensive replacing radiators that leak so it is a good idea to get a guarantee to cover you.

3. Have the radiators been flushed?

This is an important question to ask if you are buying reclaimed or second hand traditional radiators. This type of design can be prone to sediment which can build up over the years reducing efficiency. Also when you plumb in an old radiator the sediment could get flushed through your heating system causing damage to boiler parts. To avoid causing any unnecessary problems you do need to make sure that you check cast iron radiators have been fully flushed before you buy them.

4. Are there any special finishes available?

Many companies are now offering a great range of colours and finishes on their reproduction traditional radiators. This is a great way of getting the perfect look to suit your room décor. If you have a modern home you may want to opt for a bright, bold colour. This can bring the traditional look of the radiator bang up to date. If you are aiming for a more eye-catching period look then you can get some great antique paint effects such as old gold, copper and pewter.
