Standard Vehicle Coverage

Accident benefits coverage (except in Quebec)
This type of coverage will provide accident benefits if you or a family member is injured or killed in an auto accident. It will replace income for those that have lost their income due to the accident. Payments are awarded to those that are unable to carry on normal activity, care expenses if the person can no longer be a primary care giver, medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care expenses, funeral expenses, and payments to the survivors.

Collision or upset coverage
This type of coverage will cover your vehicle if damaged in an accident. This is an optional coverage. This type often has a deductible, which will be paid by you or can be deducted from the claims settlement.

Comprehensive coverage
This coverage is for your vehicle and covers your car for loss or damages that were not due to collision. This would cover such things as vandalism, flying objects, etc… This type often has a deductible, which will be paid by you or can be deducted from the claims settlement.

Damage to non-owned automobile coverage
This coverage is for rented vehicles and can be very expensive especially if you purchased it through the rental agency.

Depreciation waiver coverage
If your car has been written off in a wreck within the first two years of the original delivery date, you will receive full value of what you paid without depreciation. If the car can be repaired, your insurance company will take care of this.

Direct compensation- property damage coverage (Ontario only)
This type of insurance is an option but is mandatory in Ontario. It provides coverage for any damage to your car as well as the property inside the car where you were deemed not at fault.

Emergency road service coverage
Emergency road service coverage will cover towing services.

Family protection coverage
Family protection coverage will cover you and your family against the actions of an at-fault, underinsured driver.

Liability Insurance
This insurance covers you if someone else is injured or dies due to the accident. It also provides coverage for property damage.

Loss of use coverage
Loss of use coverage is for accidents in which you vehicle is damaged and not drivable. It will pay for a rental car or other alternate transportation until your vehicle is repaired. Limits are usually $50 per day up to $750 for the entire claim.

Uninsured motorist coverage (Ontario and Alberta)
Uninsured motorist coverage covers you in case of an accident with an at-fault, uninsured driver who is recognized as such as the scene of the wreck.

Uninsured automobile and unidentified driver (Atlantic Provinces)
This type of insurance is like the one above only that the driver does not have to be recognized as an at-fault, uninsured driver at the scene.
