Imagine answering your telephone and finding out you missed jury duty.
The person on the other end of the line tells you there's a warrant out for your arrest, but you can get rid of the warrant by giving them your social security number and credit card number to pay the fine.
What do you do?
"Hang up," said Denise Richardson, an activist in the fight against identity theft.
She said scam artists have recently been making these types of phone calls in South Florida in an attempt to get personal information.
"If your social security lands in the wrong hands and they go into these underground chat rooms and sell your information, they're going to sell it to more than one thief," said Richardson.
Richardson spent 10 years fighting to get her own identity back. She knows what it's like to be a victim and offers advice to others so they don't fall prey to identity thieves and scam artists.
Take as many precautions as possible, she advises. If someone calls and asks for information hang up. Look up the official number for the organization the claim to represent and call back.
Remember that scam artists play off fear. Don't let them make you nervous.
Slow down, think clearly and take precautions before you hand over any personal information, Richardson said.
