Are you in charge of hiring new employees? Do you know how to do a proper employment screening? Can you do a background check that will eliminate those employees that have some detrimental past activities that could harm your company? Here are some tips for you to use in your background checking.

Make sure you employee application obtains plenty of information to start your background check. Missing information that helps you learn more about the applicant will make your checking more difficult. Look over your application form and create one that will help you in your background check.

Your first step is to look into a person Social Security. The information you get from this check will give you history on a person addresses and if they have used other names. This employment screening check will also reveal whether the Social number belongs to this individual.

After you have the information from the Social, you can start the employment criminal background check. You can also start checking the individual's driving record. These two searches will give a better idea of the prospective historical data.

Once you get some information using Social Security, compare the results with the person’s application. If there is some inconsistence, ask the applicant to explain the differences. Do not always assume that they are trying to hide something. Many time they just forget many things that they have changed from their past or don’t think it’s important in their application.

The next thing to do is a pre-employment credit check. This part of the employment screening is where you look at credit report, which is not the typical credit report. You are not allowed by law to see their actual credit report with all of their financial data. You will see their report with many items blanked out.

To do an employment criminal background check you will need the applicant’s birth date. The law does not permit you to ask for a birth date on the initial employment application. What you have to do is to hire the person and make his employment status based on passing the criminal check.

Make sure you get past supervisor and co-worker names. You can get more information from these individuals than you can from Human Resources. The Human Resource Department can only give a limited amount of information to avoid being sued.

Just with the information you get on the application, you can start you employment screening background check. This is why it’s so important to have a good application form. If you use a standard application form, have it checked by an expert human resource person. Start with Social Security Check and end with a Criminal Records check.
