You probably wish your kids spent less time on the computer playing games and chatting with friends through different messengers and instead met with their friends face to face to play ball, ride bikes, learn something. Spending hours in front of a computer seems like an enormous waste of time, but with the proper direction that same computer can be a tool that will help your child discover creativity, teach them something and maybe even determine their future.
Most kids spend their computer time playing games, visiting social network sites and chatting with friends and strangers alike, so your most important duty as a parent, when it comes t ocomputers, is monitoring what your child does and also limiting the access to online content as well as the computer itself. Every child needs to get some exercise, so no matter how passionate yours is about technology, you have to make sure they go outside regularly.
Limiting the time your child is staring into the computer screen with one hand on the keyboard and the other on the PC mouse won’t do much if you let your kid do just anything when they’re on, so make sure you have parental controls installed and keep an eye on the child’s activity. It is in a way limiting your child’s freedom, but with so much inappropriate content and numerous predators online, it’s your duty to keep your child safe which means you have to be informed. Talking with your child about it and making them aware of different possibilities will keep them safer as well, so treat them as partners in discussion rather than forcing them to certain behaviors, otherwise they might want to defy you just to do it.
It’s possible to play computer games for one hour or for six, so besides limiting your childs access to computer, think of directing their interests towards something more educating, creative, developing. Give your child an idea to try to create their own game, to dabble in web design to make their own website, to try and use the computer to paint, compose or create other art. Chances are that basing on one small seed your child will grow an idea and will in fact use the computer to make something on their own, to find out if it’s possible to use it for less common goals, to utilize different features in new ways.
Children and adults alike spend a lot of time on their computers, mostly not doing much, or at least nothing useful. If you let your child just sit there for hours at a time, chances are they won’t get the homework done in time, their social skills will become awkward and they will only use their hands to type or click the mouse. That’s why you have to push your kid to do more and even if the computer is their tool of choice, to utilize it for more than driving cars, scoring touchdowns or slaying dragons on the screen.
