During an hour-long appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" that aired Wednesday, former New Life Church pastor Ted Haggard spoke at length about his conflicted sexuality, his choice to try to live heterosexually, and his regret over "betraying" the church he founded.
Asked if he was gay, he said he calls himself a "heterosexual with issues," and though he still has same-sex urges, he isn't compelled to act on them - a point his wife, Gayle, underscored when asked whether Haggard is betraying who he really is.

"I think he can make choices," she said.
Two of Haggard's five children appeared briefly on the show, saying they were shocked by the revelations about their father, but chose not to dwell on it. Instead, they focused on repairing their family.
"We knew that this kind of thing had the potential to rip our family apart," Marcus Haggard said. "We committed to working through the anger, the frustration, the sadness, the yelling and stomping out, the fights that we would have to go through. We committed to go through that process so that we could be committed to each other."

Haggard also said that at his lowest point as the scandal was unfolding, he contemplated suicide. "I had settled in my mind exactly how I was going to commit suicide," he said. "Jesus came to me, and he said, 'Now we're ready. Now I can save you.' And that's when my life started to change, because he sought me instead of me seeking him."
Haggard also reiterated an apology to New Life.
"The church, to this day, we deeply love them," Haggard said.
The segment was taped before this week's revelation that when he was pastor, Haggard made advances toward Grant Haas, a young male volunteer at the church. Winfrey came on at the end of the show to read a letter on the latest development in the Haggard story:

"Oprah, I did not reveal the relationship on your show out of privacy concerns - even though there was never any physical contact. I have regretted my irresponsible behavior. I apologized to Grant, my family and the church two years ago. I now ask him again for his forgiveness as well as the people of the church."
