The Massachusetts attorney general's office says professional fundraisers working for charities in the state are keeping almost two-thirds of the money they raise.

According to an annual report issued by the office, of the more than $284 million raised in 621 solicitation campaigns in 2007, almost $101 million went to the charities.

Jill Butterworth, a spokeswoman for Attorney General Martha Coakley, told The Boston Globe that professional fundraisers are not doing anything wrong.

She said some small charities cannot do their own fundraising and the solicitors have to pay overhead and administrative costs.

But she said it's important for the public to know where their money goes and she urges people to ask fundraisers how much of their donation goes to charities.
