A 28-year-old man faces charges he broke into three churches early Sunday morning.

About 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Burlington police officers responded to a burglar alarm at Davis Street United Methodist Church at 606 E. Davis St.

They discovered someone had broken into the church by smashing a window.

It appeared nothing was stolen.

About an hour later at 3:30 a.m., officers responded to a burglar alarm at the First Baptist Church at 400 S. Broad St.

Someone had entered by kicking in a door, although it wasn't known whether anything was stolen.

At 4:30 a.m., while conducting security checks at other churches, officers spotted someone breaking into the Westminster Presbyterian Church at 1126 W. Webb Ave.

He had entered after breaking into a rear door, stealing several items, police said.

Michael Antoine Cates, of 416 Sixth St., was arrested and charged with possession of burglary tools, larceny and three counts of breaking and entering.
