Four Factors That Separate Good Commercial Movers From the Rest

It isn’t just individuals and families who flinch when they find out it’s time for a move —businesses often move to new locations as well. While all the things that can go wrong if you hire the wrong mover can make a personal move unpleasant, when it comes to a business or commercial move, problems can be disastrous. It’s one thing to have to stay a few nights in a hotel, deal with a damaged doorway or replace a dropped TV, but it’s another thing altogether if a business is unable to open because all of its computers were misplaced in the midst of a move, workstations are a pile of unorganized components or their customer files were left behind. Add distance into the equation and the potential for trouble only increases.

If your company is considering a move —whether it’s to a larger location, a new building or even to another state— there’s no need to panic. Despite the horror stories, there are excellent movers out there. Here are four tips to help you find one that’s affordable, professional and capable, ensuring a drama free move.

1. Reputation Matters
Trusting your move to anyone with a truck is generally a bad idea. Look for a moving company that’s been in business for at least a decade. Check their reputation and ask for recommendations. A mover that has a repeat client rate of over 65 percent is going to be top notch.

2. Planning and Strategy
It may not be as big an issue with a personal move, but when it comes to a commercial move, a company that works with you to create a detailed moving plan, plus a moving strategy is a big plus. Typically this involves details such as: studying floor plans for special building requirements or special instructions needed for setting up the new office, a complete inventory of items to be moved, prioritizing items for the move, tagging workstations and other furniture to ensure straightforward reassembly and working the move around your schedule (including staging where appropriate) to minimize business disruption.

3. Flat Rate Pricing
Having the move physically completed only to be presented with a list of extra charges and fees is not going to sit well with the finance department. Look for a mover offering flat rate prices so there are no surprises.

4. Long Distance Capability
When you’re moving between cities, long distance movers are your best bet. These moving companies will have the truck fleets and trained drivers required to move cross country if needed without turning your equipment over to another party for transportation, the communications technology to keep in constant contact with the drivers (and your equipment) at all times and storage facilities at major cities such as New York.
