If you have ever seen tarps covering a structure and wondered what was going on? Unless someone is getting roof work done, you’ve probably just seen fumigation in action - the most effective technique being used for controlling hard to kill pests like bed bugs and even termites. It can be done on an entire structure or within a fumigation chamber operated by a pest control company and is usually performed as a “next step” after someone has tried liquid control methods with little or no luck.

How does it work?

Fumigation involves the release of fumigants, which are chemical vapors intended to sterilize something or eliminate pests. The area is contained in some manner so that the gases do not escape and then the gases are allowed to permeate the object or structure entirely. Once the chemicals have been able to work for the appropriate amount of time, the objects or building are aerated so that they are again safe for people to use or live in.

Residential fumigation

Although referred to as residential fumigation, this process can also be conducted on commercial buildings. Generally, the process follows four steps:

1. The structure is prepared and objects that may be contaminated by the fumigants are removed, including food, people, pets, and plants. The gas is turned off.

2. The structure is sealed, usually with plastic tarps commonly referred to as “tents.” All doors and windows are open as well as drawers and cabinets inside the home to allow the fumigants to move throughout the structure.

3. Fumigants are released into the structure and monitored through test tubes from the outside while the tent is patrolled for leaks.

4. After the fumigants have achieved their intended effect, the tarps are removed and the house is aerated until it is again safe for people to enter.

Fumigation chamber

The alternative to tenting is to pack up your items and bring them to an onsite chamber at your local pest control company. This is a less-expensive way of accomplishing the same effect and can be equally effective if the pest problem is small and contained. Once the items are placed in the chamber, the fumigants are released in the chamber and monitored. Afterwards, the items are aerated until the fumigants have dispersed.

Fumigation is a safe an effective way to rid houses and businesses of unwanted pests that have infiltrated the structure itself. Although it can be hassle, it is necessary if the pest problem has become serious and widespread.
