U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials seized 373 pounds of cocaine that were found hidden in furniture in a container at the Port of Miami on Monday.
CBP officials said officers were inspecting containers at the port when police dogs helped them find drugs hidden in some furniture in a container. In 72 pieces of furniture, officers discovered a total of 194 packages of cocaine, with a total worth of $5.5 million, CBP said.
Authorities said the ship carrying the drug-laden furniture arrived at the Port of Miami on Friday from Guyana.
"This is an outstanding seizure, and it was accomplished with one of our specialized Anti-Terrorism Contraband Enforcement Teams at the seaport. We mustn’t forget the great work our canine units perform at our seaports as well as the airports,” Director of Field Operations Harold Woodward said in a CBP news release on Tuesday.
Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement are investigating.
