A Tomah man who went to sign up for the National Guard learned he was wanted on a decade-old warrant accusing him of forgery and theft.
Nick Ziems appeared in Columbia County Circuit Court this week and said he never knew he was in trouble until he tried to join the Guard earlier this month.
He said he's been stopped by law enforcement over the years, but the warrant wasn't discovered then.
He's accused of taking a payroll check for $305 from a supermarket in July 1998, altering the name, cashing it and purchasing several items. He's described in the complaint as a terminated employee. The charges were filed at the end of December 1998.
The 29-year-old Ziems is free on $5,000 signature bond pending further court action.
