Massachusetts authorities have arrested a man they say embezzled millions of dollars over a period of more than a year from a "national entertainer" with local ties who was also his client.
The attorney general's office declined to name the entertainer, but said that between July 2007 and December 2008, Darryl McCauley, 43, of Wilmington, stole millions from the client's business accounts by transferring funds to his personal accounts.
Comedian Dane Cook, a Boston-area native, has a brother of the same name, and state records identify Darryl McCauley as an official of Cook's company, Great Dane Enterprises, Inc.
McCauley could not be reached for comment. Calls to Cook's manager, agent and attorney were not immediately returned.
Police said McCauley has been the entertainer's manager since the early 1990s. In one instance, investigators said McCauley forged a $3 million check written from his client's account.
McCauley is expected to be arraigned Wednesday in Woburn District Court.
Cook, 36, was born in Boston and raised in Arlington, Mass. He got his start in his teens on the college and comedy club circuits. After releasing three comedy albums and winning numerous comedy awards he launched a film career, starring in such hits as "Good Luck Chuck," and "Dan In Real Life," as well as "Employee of the Month," and "My Best Friend's Girl."
